Buffalo

The sound of hooves shaking the ground beneath you cannot be mistaken for anything else but the African Buffalo, (Syncerus caffer). Buffaloes are massive in size, dark brown to black, and stand 45 to 65 inches (aprox. 140 cm) high at the shoulder. Adult males weigh around 1,200 lbs. (540 kg). There are long, curving horns on both sexes, larger on the bull. Found in a vast variety of vegetation this member of the Big Five is often seen bathing in mud in order to rid itself from ticks around concentrated waterholes and mud pools

African buffaloes occur widely throughout the sub-Sahara. They prefer woodland savannah with good water sources.

According to the season, Buffaloes graze on dense grasses or on foliage. In wetland areas, they feed on reeds and aquatic plants. They don't roam far from a water source.

African buffaloes run in herds of dozens to thousands and inhabit traditional ranges. There are often bachelor herds that stay apart from the main herd. Forest buffaloes run in small troops of 20 or fewer. African buffaloes are most active in the evening and morning, preferring to rest in the heat of the day. The main predators are lion, crocodile, and spotted hyena, which prey on buffalo calves.
