Wild Dog

Another carnivore on the endangered list is Africa's painted wolf, the Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus). With each Dog having unique coat patterns and unmistakably large ears this animal is one of Africa's most vicious hunters, but most gentle companion.

Wild Dogs live in packs whose close-knit social structure is one of the peaks of mammalian social organization.

Because of the Wild Dog being an endangered species, their range has been reduced to only a few countries in Africa. In Southern Africa the Dogs can be found in Northern Botswana, Zimbabwe and the province of Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa.

Wild Dogs are purely carnivorous and feed mainly on medium size Antelope, with Impala being a main favorite. Wild Dogs have even been known to bring down Wildebeest and Zebra, by running besides their prey and wearing them down, by biting and nipping at them.

Wild Dogs are highly sociable animals, where adults are seen nurturing pups and young adults, in and around the den site.
When a Wild Dog is ill or injured, the rest of the pack will help the Dog with its healing process, by bringing it a supply of food on a regular basis.
